BLACKOUT: Protesting SOPA & PIPA

As I'm sure almost everyone knows, today is the SOPA strike. In case you've been caught up in a great book and have missed all the hubbub, HERE is the link to the Wikipedia page which explains these two (2) bills which are currently before Congress.

And HERE is a quick and painless diagram from AmericanCensorship.org which explains the potential impact of these two (2) bills.

Since these bills would impact what we do here on Between the Covers, we are joining in the internet blackout in protest to this potential legislation. We'll be back to our usual book loving ways tomorrow, but today we need to take a stand and have our voices heard... even if it's over the web.

If you would like to show your displeasure with SOPA and PIPA, here is how you can let your representatives know where you stand:

Send an ELECTRONIC MESSAGE to your Senator via AmericanCensorship.org; or

CALL your Congressman via Wikipedia's lookup page.

As book lovers we strongly support anti-piracy laws. But these two (2) bills require a reality check. There is much work to be done before they would truly protect as intended, and a fine line to be walked to draft them to do so without violating our individual rights. We hope to see this happen... in time.

  1. Thanks for linking these things, especially the infographic was really nice. I'm from the Netherlands, so it won't have that big of an inpact on me, but I made a blog post about this nevertheless.

While I admittedly don't understand the full impact these two bills could have, I do know that I post this blog and surf via the WORLD wide web. So I would think that while SOPA and PIPA would have the most impact in the U.S., their effect would be felt to some extent everywhere.

Thanks for reading and posting about this!

  3. Without a lot of sites the internet would not even be worth going on.Piracy is going to find other ways and removing half the sites on the internet is not going to help.
