Goodreads Summary: Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. And if he can't have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.

But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.

Review: Lover Revealed is the fourth book in J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Picking up one month after Lover Awakened, (see review HERE) this book tells the story of Brian “Butch” O'Neal, the human who has been taken in by the vampires.

Butch is a former Caldwell police officer who was a frenemy to Beth Randall. If you’ve read the earlier books in the series *wonders how there is anyone left that I haven’t convinced, coerced or blackmailed to read these books* then you know how Butch comes to be living among the vampires, something unheard of as secrecy from humans is paramount to the species survival.

Shortly after his immersion in the vampire world Butch meets Marissa, a beautiful female member of the glymera and Wrath’s former shellan. Butch falls hard for Marissa... I’m talking love at first sight, the world shifted and gravity changed to tie him to her kind of love, BtCers... and she seemed just as fascinated by him.

But months have passed and Butch hasn’t seen or heard from Marissa. He constantly finds himself sitting on the sidelines in the Vampires’ war with the Lessening Society. He is living in a house that isn’t his, eating food that he doesn’t pay for... and generally feeling like a useless piece of flesh.

Meanwhile Marissa is going about her daily routine: running her brother, Havers’, home; helping out in his clinic; attending council meetings... and slowly withering away. The glymera is very unforgiving and have formed their own opinions about why she and Wrath did not mate. Of course in their eyes, the fault lies with her. Holding her head high and behaving every inch a lady, Marissa’s spirit is being crushed under the constant weight of the disapproving stares of her brother and her peers.

Then fate intervenes, bringing Butch and Marissa back together. Events unfold which show them the truth of the past months absence and allow them to admit that they care for each other. But what does an unemployed alcoholic cop who is hanging on the fringes of society have to offer a female of worth like Marissa? And what does a female who has known nothing other than quiet comfort and privilege have to offer a hardass former homicide cop?

*pulls on full body armor and takes a deep breath before continuing*

This is my one of my least favorite books of the series. And it has nothing to do with the characters.

I love the cop and think he is a fabulous addition to the BDB world. He brings much to the game and his relationship with V is absolutely fab on so many levels. He is a true male of worth who, despite some mistakes in his past, is genuinely a good person who puts others before himself. And he gets many gold stars from me for his stand on hitting women and his method of handling the guys who do.

I am among the few who actually like and respect Marissa. *says it louder* Her spunk impresses the hell out of me. She was raised in a very confining bubble, yet finds ways to slip out of it and be more than society deems she is supposed to be. And when Havers pulls an “asshat of the century” move, she not only stands on her own two feet, she kicks ass and takes names... and his is at the top of the list. *whispers* I found that scene particularly satisfying.

Having said that... and wanting it abundantly clear that I really do love the characters... this book did almost nothing for me. I didn’t like that Butch, who had until this point been so dogged and determined, was suddenly a sodden, depressed mess. I didn’t like that Marissa, who had found the strength of will to stand up to Wrath, was incapable of calling Butch on his BS when he was being a jerk. I feel like these two got short changed, that the very characteristics which I like most about them were used to underscore their weaknesses. While some might see that as brilliant, I saw it as frustrating and not true to the characters. And don’t even get me started on what happens when Butch says the word “baby.” *UGH*

It was good to go back to this world and see where these characters were at in their lives, to see the changes in them from the last book to this one. Lover Revealed has Ward’s trademark quick, sharp dialogue and her uniquely entertaining if not grammatically correct style. And once again, this book contains smoking hot sex, so read it with an ice cold bottle of water handy. Oh, and BtCers? Butch will teach you all you never knew you didn’t know about french kissing. *winks*

  1. That wasn't bad... you had me worried for nothing. LOL! Actually, I can see you point. I just tend to get so wrapped up in the story sometimes, I don't look any further than that. I loved Butch and I always kind of liked Marissa (I guess you can add me to that short list.) Don't even get me started about V & Butch. I think that may be why I love Butch so much. Who couldn't love someone that devoted to V? *sigh* Thanks for the review and giving me a different perspective. Everyone needs one of those every now and then. :)

  2. Here we go...you better sit cause this is going to be long. *laughs*

In my case, before we start I need to to do a little thing *insert fangirl scream here* Ok, I am done. I LOVE me some Cop. But it was not always like that. When we first met him in Wrath's book I sort of had issues with him, manly because he was hitting on Beth and by that time I was completely team Wrath. But Cop won me over on that scene when he meets all the Brotherhood and he stands up for himself. That was THE moment! He was among the scariest guys ever and he stand his ground and impressed even Vishous and Rhage with his attitude. How could I not love him after that?

Then there is Butch and V...OMG! I probably shouldn't start talking about this, but let's just say that their bromance is one of the things that makes me love Butch even more. I mean, as a V girl, I am genetically designed to love everyone who loves and care for V. That's just how it is and the Cop is so amazing to V...*sighs*

And here, dear Lou, is where we start to disagree: Marissa. I have serious issues with Marissa. I don't like her at all. She's too sweet, too whinny, too bring. I don't like that she doesn't stand by Butch's decisions not even once. He wanted to make the regression, she was against. He wanted to make the transition, she was against. He wanted to fight with the Brotherhood, she was *surprise* against. OMG! What did she want? That Butch stayed home and baked while his brothers were out fighting?? At sometimes it seemed to me that all Marissa ever wanted was a male to worship her. Someone to see how and say how beautiful she was, how sweet, how pure, how whatever...*grrrrrrr* It seemed to me that she never wanted or accepted Butch for what he truly was and to me it was always like Butch had to behave in a certain way whenever he is around her, cause Princess Marissa can't deal with the real Butch, the one who curses and fights and has always a smart ass comment to say. To me, even that thing with clothes that Butch has is a reflexion of his needs to please and be accepted by Marissa. It seemed that he had to even dress better to be UP to her, you know?! Yeah, told you, I have deep issues with her. I really, really wish Butch had ended up with another vampire, but that's my issues too, right?!

Bottom line is, I love Butch and even though I don;t like Marissa, I love Lover Revealed. I think it's a great book, cause we get to see another side of Butch and I think it's in this book that Butch and V's relationship takes in another step and I like to watch that happening. Even though it was pretty painful to Vishous. And Sweet Mary Mother of God, after reading this book French kissing got a whole new level to me. *fans self* And how can you not like when Butch says "baby" . I LIVE for the moments when he says "baby" #TeamBabyFTW. *laughs* That's it, I love how smartass Butch is, and how even though life was miserable to him, he found strength to carry on and how he never stop believing things could be better to him. Cop is brave, adorable, gorgeous and has that wonderful mouth that he knows how to use so damn well. I may be a V girl to the core, but Cop has a big special place in my heart!

Darling, even we don't agreeing in some points, I loved the review. It's good that we don't always agree, that way we get to see other point of views and that is always a good thing.

    Mwahhhhh!

*laughs* I told you... I don't bash. And I truly love this series and all of the characters. I just really think that Butch and Marissa got short changed in this book. And you'll hear an even more vocal opinion when I get to Love Unleashed!

But they are great characters, and Butch is a total hoot. I love his smart mouthed ways and his way too big heart.

  4. Lou, I have to agree with you. Love the cop and really respect Marissa - I can see why she is the way she is - but some scenes of this book disgusted me deeply. Didn't expect Butch to be a jerk we has at some points. LR is not my fav book also. Great review! MWAH!
